Last week the engine all of a sudden shuttered then quit and wouldn't restart. Our mechanic (whom I trust) was hoping it was just a sensor since one of them was full of carbon but today he ran a compression test and found that the number 4 cylinder is shot and has no compression. Compression Ratio (volume ratio) = 10:1 on a N/A Subaru (if that is what it is) ignoring the closing position of the inlet valve. P1 is atmospheric or 14.7PSI (absolute). Ignoring heat of compression (i.e. T2 = T1) then P2 at top of compression will be 147PSI absolute or 132.3 PSI Gauge.
compression test, oil coolant mixing, are useless on that engine when the HG's fail. lead down tests i wouldn't put much more faith in either. best tests are "Block tests" which test for exhaust gases in the coolant or a gas analyzer. Did they do those? Even though aren't fool proof though, a Subaru HG leak can pass the block tests for some reason.
